Frequently Asked Questions for Public Reporting Environment
How is the Commitments of
Traders available via CFTC’s Public Reporting Environment different from the report
that is available currently?
The Public Reporting Environment allows users
to download data for user-selected reporting dates and for selected groups of
contract markets. Additionally, the Public Reporting Environment provides users
the ability to use an Application Programming Interface (API) to download data.
Are there changes to the
existing traditional report?
The existing COT report has been left
unchanged. Any users preferring to access COT reports by traditional methods may
continue to do so by accessing CFTC.gov.
Is
there any difference between the data published in the existing, traditional COT
report and the data found in the Public Reporting Environment?
The traditional COT and the Public Reporting
Environment draw from exactly the same source data. There is no difference. In
the traditional COT, users may select reports in Long Format or Short Format for
the Legacy and Disaggregated (DCOT) reports, but not the Traders in Financial
Futures (TFF) or in the Supplemental report.
All information contained in the Long Format and the Short Format of the
traditional reports is also contained in the Public Reporting Environment.
What COT reports are available
via CFTC’s Public Reporting Environment?
Both the traditional COT and the Public
Reporting Environment contain the same seven COT reports: 1) Legacy Futures
Only; 2) Legacy Futures and Options Combined; 3) DCOT Futures Only; 4) DCOT
Futures and Options Combined; 5) TFF Futures Only; 6) TFF Futures and Options
Combined; and 7) Supplemental.
What report publication dates may
be selected for data extraction?
Users may select report publication dates going
back as far as 1986 for the Legacy report and to 2006 for the DCOT, TFF and
Supplemental reports.
What are the available product
groups?
From the Commodity Group Name drop-down menus, users will find three groups: Agricultural,
Financial, and Natural Resources. Drilling down enables users to
select subgroups and specific contract markets. Users may select to download at
any level of aggregation. For instance, selecting Agricultural by itself
would return thousands of rows of data. Agricultural and Grains
would narrow the amount of downloadable data returned by the query while Agricultural,
Grains, Wheat, Chicago SRW Wheat would narrow the data
further.
Users can view COT report
information by selecting an exchange name in the traditional view of the report.
Can users select specific exchanges for Legacy
COT reports in the Public Reporting Environment?
The Public Reporting Environment contains all of the
information contained in the traditional COT, including the exchanges
associated with each contract market. The Public Data Reporting Environment
does not filter data by exchange from drop-down menus. After downloading data from
the Public Reporting Environment, users may filter in Excel or another format.
Users employing the API methodology similarly will have the ability to filter
and sort data downloaded from the Public Reporting Environment.
Are data exported to Excel, or
other format, limited to specific contract markets?
Users of the Public Reporting Environment can
export for multiple contract markets or subcategories at different levels of
aggregation.
What formats are available for downloading data?
Users may download data in CSV, CSV
for Excel, XML, RSS, RDF, CSV for Excel (Europe), TSV for Excel.
May users employ code for data
extraction instead of navigating drop-down menus?
An Applications Program Interface (API) for
extracting data programmatically is available for users wishing to access the
open data via proprietary code. API links are prominently displayed on each
selected report page. Instructions are available for establishing API
connectivity via these links.
Will data dissemination for the
Public Reporting Environment occur at the scheduled release time?
The report publication schedule for the
traditional COT on CFTC.gov remains unchanged. Data disseminated via the Public
Reporting Environment will be released simultaneously in parallel.
